Movie Review: The Hunger Games

Title: The Hunger Games
Director: Gary Ross
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth

Synopsis: In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives. Written by Suzanne Collins

Verdict: I am a HUGE fan of the books. And when I first heard that they were making The Hunger Games a movie, naturally, I was nervous. Then they started casting the actors and actresses and I approved of everyone. THEN, they started showing little clips and trailers from the movie and I was getting pretty freakin' excited. I bought my "District 12 Tribute" shirt and was a complete goner. I was obsessed. I have listened to the songs from the soundtrack more times then I care to admit. I have discovered two Hunger Games parodies on YouTube (they're both actually really cute- I'm a fan! You can check them out HERE and HERE.) I bought my tickets THE DAY they went on sale. Hype was building up around the blogosphere, on Twitter, Facebook, it was everywhere! Then March 23rd arrived. I was once again getting really nervous. What if my expectations were too high? What if it was another Twilight? What if I absolutely hate it? I shouldn't have worried. IT WAS AHHH-MAZING!!! I'm not saying it's completely perfect, because perfection is impossible. But it's pretty darn close. First of all, it's stays very close to the book. A rarity in book-to-movie adaptations. I will admit that it was a tad bit rushed, but that's only because they had SO MUCH too try to fit into their time constraint. Next, there were some things they changed that made me wonder how it will work out for the sequel such as SPOILER: Peeta doesn't lose his leg?!? SPOILER OVER. But like a said, this movie was pure awesome-sauce. Especially for those of us who have read the book. Those who haven't might find themselves being slightly confused and not forming as deep a connection with the characters. But overall, it was enjoyed by all!

Rating: 5/5 Stars

  5. I was the movie without reading the book and I loved it! I loved it so much, that I'm now reading the book. I need to find out what will happen next :D

I loved the casting! The actors did an amazing job (eventhough I don't know if they match the characters in the book very well)

Everything was explained in a way that I could follow everything. I liked that :) I think that, just as an example, Harry Potter became too difficult for non-readers. I'm very happy that this movie was understandable without knowledge of the books :)
